Rick Warren's "-Nations" of Innovation
A friend sent a link to a TEDS talk that Rick Warren did on his eight “-nations” of Innovation. In his 15-minute talk (you can watch it by following the hyperlink) he laid out eight questions to ask in the process of innovation:Termination. What do I first need to stop? “You can have so many irons in the fire that you put out the fire.” When the horse is dead, dismount.Collaboration/Coordination. How do we do it larger, faster, cheaper with a team? If you want to grow and have a movement, you have to have a team, whether paid or volunteer.Combination. What could we mix together, blend, merge to create something new? How can we take things that are opposites and put them together like savory and sweet, or mixing the 12-Step program with the 8 Beatitudes (Celebrate Recovery).Elimination. What part could we take out to make it simpler? Steve Case of AOL: “We always overestimate the amount of complexity that people will put up with.” Reincarnation. What has died that we could bring back to life in a new form? What worked 20 years ago and died that could work in a new format?Rejuvenation. How could we change the purpose or motivation for what we’re doing? That is, not changing what we do but changing why we do it. Illumination. How can we look at this in a new light? Sometimes we need fresh eyes. Ask customers, competition or focus group—anybody outside your organization to give us a different perspective.Fascination. How could we make it more interesting?
