Who Knew?

I have always chuckled smugly when I've seen people snapping photos using a flash to capture long-distance shots. Don't they know the flash is for illuminating the foreground?

Yet the only way I could capture the sunset in Venice was to use my flash. Yup. I had to let people think I was a photognoramus.

I stumbled on the technique by mistake. I accidentally turned on the flash after shooting a bunch of sunset shots that bleached out the sky. Only when I shot these with the flash did the point-and-shoot capture evening colors.

Maybe some of those people I scoffed at knew what they were doing after all?
