Family Update
Ah, life's simple pleasures! While I was gone last weekend teaching at our women's retreat, my hubby got busy replacing my ugly, leaking faucet with a prettier, easier-to-use version. Of course, once he got under the sink, he discovered a leak that required turning off the water to the entire house and a trip to a home-improvement store. But the end result was a delighted wife.
The house smells like Chloe of late. Our daughter received this classy perfume from her grandfather for Christmas, and if the constant aroma is any indication, she loves it.
The violin playing continues to delight. But she refuses to practice with the door open. I even offered her five bucks one afternoon to leave the door open so we could enjoy it. Nothing doing.
We've had interrupted sleep of late. Two nights ago someone rang our doorbell at 3 AM. We peeked outside and saw a police car in front of our house. My hubby opened the door, and the officer told him they'd been called by someone who saw a white suburban parked down the street. Apparently two guys got out and disappeared down the alley. When the officers searched the car, they found our address written on a sheet of paper.
Creepy.
At 7:30 the next morning, the sprinkler repair service with the 8:30 appointment rang the doorbell. "Sorry we're early," they said. Us, too.
Then last night at 11:30, after we'd fallen asleep, the phone rang. It was the officer calling with an update (he must work nights) on the previous night's work. He said that he and his partner waited at the suburban and arrested two guys when they returned. They had stolen a tire to fix their flat and are now sitting in jail.
We're super grateful that our taxes keep these guys employed. But tonight we hope to actually get a full eight hours' sleep.
The best news of the week: My third dissertation proposal, which has been rejected twice by my committee chair, looks like it'll go forward to the rest of the committee, after all. My supervisor likes the idea, but because it's a creative dissertation, nobody has a good sample for how to craft the proposal. They seem to have a clear idea of what they don't want, but nobody can really articulate what they do want. It'll be another week before I know for sure, but I can't do anything but wait this week. And that is actually good news. I'm glad to get a break from thinking about it!
