Teach Yourself Well
Last month I attended three conferences--Catalyst, a media training event, and the Evangelical Press Association national meeting. After sitting through riveting keynotes and numerous workshops on ebooks and social networking and trends, I learned some stuff. And one of the biggest "take-aways" I received was this: I can take a more active role in self-educating.
Many employers are shifting from sending their people away for development to providing personalized employee training inhouse. They do so by pulling together resources from various websites and personalizing content for a specific employee. A major resource for this is TED: Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world, like this outstanding delivery by the COO of Facebook on Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders. I shot a link to one of my savvy business-woman students last month, and she told me it made her want to cry while it also gave her courage.
You can teach yourself InDesign. Or German. Or learn about economics. Or watch a youth orchestra and hear their inspiring story. Or learn how to better interact with people. What do you want to learn next? There's probably a TED video or an App for that.
Oh, and Vimeo is on the rise, and will give Youtube a run for its moolah. That's because, I'm told, Vimeo runs on a format that is friendlier to phones.
And one big piece of advice for business people: Keep your LinkedIn profile updated. LinkedIn is emerging as the number one job and info networking site.
