Happy Birthday, Mr. Washington

I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man. --George Washington

Honor the father of our country on his day:
Go to the library and check out 1776 by John McCullough. If you lack time to read, check out the audio version, read by the author himself. (Not there? See if your librarian can score it for you via interlibrary loan.)If you live in New York City, buzz on over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this week and take a look at this painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware. It takes up most of a wall, and the museum has provided a nice bench so you can sit and marvel. (While there, check out the sculpture of Artemis in the same room.) If you live in the Washington, D.C., area (or plan to visit soon), check out Mt. Vernon, the Custis Lee Mansion (in Arlington Cemetery), and the Washington Monument. Sit down with a child and make a three-corner hat. Have a cherry-flavored dessert such as a sundae with a cherry on tip, cherry pie, or cherry cobbler. Plan to visit Washington, D.C., in April to see the cherry blossoms.
